Romanian TV journalist Carmen Scutariu – currently on the Thomson Foundation summer Broadcast Journalism course – has won a major award for her news reporting.
Carmen heard about her success in a ‘phone call to Cardiff from her boss at the Romanian regional broadcaster TVR in the city of Iasi.
She has won the ‘Best News Report of the Year’ category at the 5th annual national regional TV awards in her home country.
The prize is for her report on two young boys, forced by poverty to share a train ticket, enabling them to attend school only on alternate days. The story touched the hearts of local businessmen and others who donated money to fund the boys’ education.
Carmen (29) regards the late Romanian journalist Vanda Condurache as her mentor.
Vanda was killed in a car crash earlier this year, and Carmen was awarded a scholarship to attend the Thomson Foundation course in her friend’s memory.
“This prize that I’ve won is Vanda’s, not mine,” she said. “She was always encouraging me, and it is due to her encouragement that I have succeeded. Both my scholarship and now this prize are a tribute to her. She inspired me.”
Carmen, who specialises in educational issues, has worked for TVR Iasi for five years.
