BLOG NETWORK: The BBC’s award-winning User-Generated Content Hub is responsible tracking down the conversation AROUND a story, and incorporating it within the BBC’s coverage.
The hub, which has been in operation since last autumn, is based at the heart of the BBC’s London newsroom and has around 20 staff. Journalists scour the internet for pictures, videos, and other content that might contribute to a story, which they then verify and clear for use. But they also find people, sources who can be contacted by reporters in other departments within the BBC.
So how does it work? Jonathan Stray interviewed hub journalist Sylvia Costeloe (you can listen to their conversation or read the transcription) gives a great insight into how one of the world’s foremost media operations has integrated social media networks into its core service.
