Introducing TV for the first time

Thomson Foundation was asked to draw up a master plan for the introduction of a national television service for Tanzania, in 1992 one of the few countries in the world without one. This included planning and equipping studios in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Arusha, a recruitment, pay and training strategy and a two-year staff training programme. The launch of the TV service coincided with the foundation's upgrading of Tanzania’s Information Service.

"Our work included assessing and overcoming the problems caused by Tanzania's hilly land mass to enable all its population to receive the news service. This involved our engineering experts studying and visiting potential sites to choose the best spots for transmitters"
