Giving young women in Greece a jump-start in journalism

Thomson Foundation has teamed up with singer Beyoncé’s Chime for Change campaign and the Huffington Post’s founder to seek crowdfunding to encourage more young women in Greece to become journalists.

The aim is to raise $26,900 (£17,400) to enable 12 participants to participate in a five-day workshop on story-telling so their voices can be heard and to “jump start” their careers in journalism.

Arianna Huffington, founder of the online news aggregator, Huffington Post, grew up in Athens “around journalism and stories” and her father was also a journalist.

Arianna said: “Today, Greece is going through a time of steep challenges, and as the people of Greece come together to seek solutions to these challenges, it’s essential that women’s voices be part of the conversation.

With $26,900, Chime and the Thomson Foundation can jump-start the careers of these young women.

That’s the belief behind this new initiative from Chime for Change and the Thomson Foundation. Together, they have created an opportunity for young Greek women journalists whose voices desperately need to be heard.”

She added: “With $26,900, Chime and the Thomson Foundation can jump-start the careers of these young women, not only at the workshop but through mentoring and publishing opportunities afterward, including on The Huffington Post, and help them tell their stories and the stories of their communities, friends and families.”

Nigel Baker, chief executive of the Thomson Foundation, said: “We are delighted to support the appeal, which is an innovative way of ensuring more women in Greece get an opportunity to become journalists.”
