For the first time, the legal community in Kosovo has a collection of landmark cases to refer to from the European Court of Human Rights on the right to freedom of expression.
Thomson Foundation has published the cases to help increase the understanding of journalists, lawyers, judges, prosecutors and professionals when dealing with cases involving media.
The collection, published in the Albanian language, includes landmark cases dealt with by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on; whistle-blowing, access to public information and protection of sources.
The publication is one of the activities of a two-year project title “Media for All” funded by the European Union and implemented by the Thomson Foundation in Kosovo. Its main aim is to increase capacity and standing of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) and the Press Council of Kosovo (PCK) and to improve understanding and knowledge of the role of self-regulation and regulation in media by editors, journalists and the legal community through cooperation with the Kosovo Judicial Institute (KJI).
The collection of landmark cases on the right to freedom of expression is the first one in the Albanian language.
The publication of cases follows several media law round-table discussions on Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights on the right to freedom of expression and information.
“The collection of landmark cases of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on the right to freedom of expression is welcomed as it is the first one in the Albanian language that has ever been published in Kosovo" says Besim Morina, acting director of the Kosovo Judicial Institute.
"It offers the legal community, especially those working in the judicial system, a clear guide of best European standards on very sensitive matters related to the right to freedom of expression.
This collection is a valuable source that will contribute in increasing and strengthening application of article 8 and 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights and jurisprudence of the Strasburg Court in Kosovo.”
