Improving public credibility of state television

Thomson Foundation was one of the first Western organisations to work in Serbia after the war with NATO – brought in to instill a culture of objective reporting and address the lack of public trust in the state broadcasting service, Radio Television Serbia (RTS). The foundation's experts helped to change broadcasting values, inculcating objective news reporting into journalists who previously only reiterated official government statements.

Since 1992, the news journalism of RTS had been used as a propaganda tool by the Milosevic regime and hundreds of journalists had been fired for failing to fall into line. Now we told them: you decide what to broadcast. We conducted some formal training, but then worked with individual programme teams, advising and reviewing. It all helped
